While on the ferry I phoned a friend I rarely see in Vancouver. Her opening line was ‘You are my most loyal friend,” What a lovely sentiment! We went to have a wonderful 30 minute chat about some standout moments in her teaching, including having a savant in her class who had never been allowed to go to school in Afghanistan and went on to win a $100,000 scholarship here. She said that when this student was in any classroom, both the teacher and the students performed better.
I had a moment today, in a dance rehearsal where I didn’t know one of the other dancers, although she looked familiar to me. I opened with, “hi! I recognize you, but I don’t believe I know your name.” We started chatting, thinking of all the ways we could possibly know each other, and it turns out that we didn’t know each other at all – although there were many ways that we could have previously met, we have a few friends in common. We figured out, that we recognized each other, because she works at Tillicum mall.
Small, wonderful world.
Today I was sitting in Mystic Market at UVIC eating lunch and group of four asked if they could share the table with me and my friend, we said of course. One girl remarked how the my food smelled delicious and it was making her hungry. I asked her “would you like to try one?” Referring to the waffle fries I had in front of me. She said she would love that if I was willing too, and I gave her one. She decided to go get food herself, and sure enough she got a burger and waffle fries. When she sat down, she asked me “would you like to try one?” She handed me a fry, and said good deeds have to be re-payed.
Talked to a man at work yesterday who makes custom shoes for himself and his family. He said he’d spent time learning shoe-making from Native American people up island, and that the difference between these custom shoes and modern store-bought shoes was immense. He didn’t sell them because it could take a few months to make just one pair.
I love studying what is ideal for the human body, and have my own doubts about modern shoes, so we shared in a passionate conversation on the topic. Always love talking to master craftsmen about their craft.
He was on his way out the door but I caught him with “So did you make the shoes you’re wearing?”. He stuck around for like 20 minutes after that to chat with me! I think sometimes you just need to communicate your interest.
Ooh – inquring about someone’s art is an excellent way of connecting!
I decided to wear my pin this morning that we received from our workshop, trying to gauge if it made a difference. I took the bus to school, and two UVIC students asked me “So what are your plans for today?” I responded and and we talked back and forth for a minute or two. After, I asked them if they noticed my pin. They said they did, and that it “made us comfortable, knowing that you were going to be responsive if we started talking.”
Slow steps, getting people comfortable with starting conversations takes time, and hopefully the two guys I talked to will gain the confidence to engage with others.
Another fellow from the States ordered a WGWT card deck. Caused me to look again at our web site and see the great video I shot about how Steven used the card deck in his days. I linked a helpful follow up page to Steven’s video.
