Monique Gray Smith’s interview was very interesting. She said that listening can be more important than talking sometimes and that it is important to know your roots. Of the many stories Monique told, the one I found most interesting was the time she and her mother finally got to see Wayne Gretzky. During the game Monique passed out due to her drinking problem that started at an early age. Her mother pulled her out by the ear and scolded her. While that was happening Wayne Gretzky scored a natural hat trick. Monique felt so guilty that her mother missed it, that she fixed her drinking problem and decided to help people. Monique’s interview spoke to me the most because I could relate how she had a lot of difficulty with moving a lot at an early age.
I think Monique’s interview was most beneficial to me out of all the interviews. I learned how you should listen as much as possible, and how fill a room with love when you enter it. One story and lesson that stood out to me, was how she started drinking when she was 11 and kept drinking for the next 11 years. She only realized how bad it was when she passed out at a hockey game, and made her mother miss an amazing event, a natural hat trick by Wayne Gretzky. Only then did she figure out that her actions affect others, and that in her case, that effect had been negative. An idea I thought was interesting, was how involved Monique was in her community. She worked in Hospitals and Nursing Homes. I thought Monique had an amazing and truly inspirational story.
During Monique’s interview, I learned a lot about how to help people, and how Monique was inspired to do that. One thing that stood out for me was when she said that your actions affect everyone around you, you get to choose for that effect to be positive or negative in the end. I liked how she said the best way to help people is just to listen to them. She also said that her grandmother once told her that when you enter a room, fill it with love. I think that is a beautiful quote, one people should think more about but mostly when they need inspiration because in my opinion it is a very inspiring quote. Monique said what inspired her to help people was that she felt obligated to. I think everyone is obligated to help people in a way but mostly the ones in need, and I think if we did, if we followed Monique’s example, the world would be a better place. I also liked that she was willing to share stories of her own life with us.
In my opinion, I think that Monique’s interview was the best out of the three. She had a really good choice of words, and the stories she told us were very interesting. She also helps out her community a lot, volunteering in hospitals and in nursing homes, which are a big help. I can also sort of relate to her, she wanted to become a doctor when she was little and I want to become a doctor as well. Monique didn’t become a doctor though, because she said that she was frightened, and she backed down. This inspired me to follow my dreams, and to become a doctor when I’m older. <3
