I loaded my bike on the rack on the bus. The driver said, ” I don’t get it. It’s a beautiful sunny day, you’re taking a bus?”
“That’s a mystery, isn’t it! ”
Made me think of ‘The Magical Mystery Tour”.. I felt quite assured that either going or coming back I would be rewarded, find value . And I was… It was a magical conversation.
I ran a series of workshops back in 2008/9 called Conversations with Roger helping people discover the power of personal story. A woman came to a number of those. This week she phoned asking me to help with collecting stories for a community housing project that will take place over a month. She has a budget to cover the expenses. What a perfect fit!
Exploration, connection, learning and inspiration
Riding home from downtown with an almost empty bus. Shortly a fellow sits facing me with headphones on not looking up. Eventually he did a couple of times momentarily and I gestured to him to unplug.I asked if he was going to school.. He’d just completed his Masters, and was returning to Zambia tomorrow. We had a wonderful talk about hope, Africa, options and next steps for the country and himself. He had a wonderful presence about him. Many of his friends have similar aspirations.
I told him of a former student of mine who I first met when another teacher asked if there was anything I could do with him. He went on to great things.. and that he reminded me of that student.
Evidence of care and support
Walking on the path to UVic I saw a young woman crouching … I saw that she was lifting small worms onto a leaf. This is one of the evidences of compassion and support for life from my morning ‘travels.’
A few minutes later as I left the path, we waved goodbye.. Connections often start with empathy.
I saw a woman with a fine new broom. It had a Hallowe’en feel so I asked her if I could take a picture. When she saw the picture she shifted into a pose… which she was happy to have clicked. When we pay attention, things change, spirits lift.
Culture, business, history insights at the back of the bus
Started off with being at the bus stop when it arrived a few minutes early.
Sitting at the back of the bus I did a quick survey. Student beside me plugging in, passenger on the left side seat, trying to start a book, and then a fellow with a tie, sporting a zippered-arm 3/4 length coat got on with no devices and a briefcase. There was a seat beside him… and being a traveler I took the risk and sat beside him.
We had a remarkably interesting and fun convo about Polish history, resulting in workers abroad being considered ‘exotic’ oversees. He teaches international business at UVic. His questions brought out my alluding to being a Traveler In Your Own Town..and then I shared how my Community Schools Interviews which could help him in his teaching. He noted that listening and asking good questions were key skills needed in business. We’ll see where this ‘trip’ leads both of us.
