I hadn’t heard from a friend in 3 months. I phoned her on her cell and got her husband. He mentioned she was in hospice. Early this morning I went to visit her there at the Royal Victoria Hospice. She mostly sleeps all the time. It look me about an hour to find the building.. No one could tell me where it was. When I got to her room and said her name, she opened her eyes. Although she doesn’t talk, she responded to me by pressing my hand in response to some of the things I asked, or said. It was a special time together.
She passed on two days later.
In the foyer of the Multi Faith Centre at UVic which is located at the entrance of Finnerty Gardens, there are two large beds of peace lilies. I’m so impressed with the care that the university plant crew provides in their care and maintenance. Researching what these plants do for our environment is indeed noteworthy:
Peace lilies offer a variety of benefits, including:
Air purification: They naturally cleanse indoor air.
Improved sleep: Peace lilies promote better sleep.
Increased humidity: They act as natural humidifiers.
Stress relief: Having peace lilies can help reduce stress.
Enhanced creativity: They boost creativity.
Aesthetics: Peace lilies enhance the beauty of indoor spaces.
Calm and tranquility: They promote a sense of peace.
Uplifted mood: Having peace lilies can improve your mood.
Boosted productivity: They contribute to a productive environment.
Promote recovery: Peace lilies are beneficial for health.
One of my favourite questions of someone is what drew them to their line of work, or this particular location? Today I asked a gardener at UVic. “I’ve always loved plants.. as did my mother . My name is Ivy….”
At my office at UVic, one staff member is away for a couple of weeks. Our director who usually works in a different building comes over and works remotely on her regular files. Jean Luc and Babette think she’s great for a number of tangible reasons. As you can see Jean Luc helps her with her desk work. She seems to appreciate the company. He’s quiet and on the whole, not very demanding or critical.
For Mother’s Day we were going to have a BBQ here. We inherited a BBQ when we bought this house 15 years ago. I was thinking of getting rid of it. When I connected the gas line I found the gas wouldn’t flow in the BBQ. Loni researched and found a new one on sale at Home Depot. I went and got it.. and upon taking it out of the box, we found it was for propane, not natural gas.
Meanwhile with no BBQ Loni and Ash decided to use our stove’s oven at 400 degrees. Did a great job.
I asked a friend for his recommendation of a metal recycling operation.. and he reminded me of the address where I’d visited before. It was close, friendly, well organized and easy to drop off.
I easily returned the new BBQ to Home Depot.. in slightly dishevelled packaging. It was graciously received.
I was impressed.
Driving back from a party on Charlton road… we passed by a free children’s desk being given away.. We circled back for a second look.. and it fit perfectly in our Tesla. I had a can of premium white paint. Loni and I removed the stickers, etc on the desk .. and gave it some several coats.. It now looks like new. Quite the upgrade!
