Turning the tables at an interview
Recently went to an undergraduate counselor to plan out my graduation, and I asked her “What is an area of your life that you want to improve?” She said that she doesn’t get involved in the community and on campus outside of her job, so she wants to volunteer more to end the trend. Maybe even become a traveler!
Enriching the conversations with customers
From work a few days ago, I got chatting up one of our regulars and found out she recently was motivated to live out her decades-long dream of writing a children’s book. She spent thousands of dollars and has been working with a publishing company for the last year making this dream a reality. We could have talked for hours but I felt like I had to get back to work.
I told her I was getting into gardening and it turns out she was looking for someone to make use of her huge garden space and heritage seeds that she had no time to use. I told her I’d keep her posted when I felt more knowledgable — I’m really excited about this!!
We had stored my son’s snow board and boots for about 15 years. Although when new they were expensive we were told they had little resale value now. I put them in Freecycle and a mom with a son with size 11 feet, responded. They were being hit hard by rental fees. Good to see these going to a good home. We talked about ‘paying it forward’ and she mentioned that she has given much away herself.
Today my friend asked if I wanted to come sit with him and his group for a business project, because he knows it interests me. I sat down with them, and they were doing a project on initiatives to help market local business. When they took a break I asked the group “How does this tie in to what’s important to you?” They all agreed that local business is the lifeblood of a healthy community, it creates a dynamic, where people are known for what they do in the community. They all agreed they want to engage with the people that are invested in the city.
Went to in to get my guitar re-strung and I asked a man playing there “Why did you start playing guitar?” He said that guitar gave him something to focus on in life and he loves it. He stated his previous struggles with abusing substances, and how during rehabilitation he started playing and has continued ever since.
Went to see Katie McNally from Boston, ‘one of the most innovative voices in acoustic music in North America, with genre-bending pianist Neil Pearlman and violist Shauncey Ali; are performing an evening of tunes bursting from the Scottish and Cape Breton traditions.’ It so reminded us of the music we heard when we visited Prince Edward Island a few years ago. And like in PEI, the musicians were very accessible afterwards. Great spirit.
