At the hair salon where I get my hair cut, the clientele is mostly on the older side. So, to see someone with gray hair is not unusual. This particular person was different because she was being helped into the salon by the hair stylist and she was using a walker, quite bent over. It made me think of a healing in the Bible where a woman was bent over and could “in no wise lift herself up”*. Moving can be a bit tricky given the close quarters of each station, but the hair stylist was very kind and patient while maneuvering around obstacles. I noticed all this looking in the mirror while my hair was being cut.
The next thing I noticed was the older woman’s departure. Her hair looked smooth and sleek. Her steps were steadier, and she exited more quickly than she had come into the salon. I smiled seeing her move more easily, without any help other than her walker.
When I was done at the salon, I started walking home. Just up ahead a block or so was the older woman with the walker that I had seen earlier. I caught up to her and told her I thought her hair looked lovely (it was a nice cut and had ‘movement’ in it), and she thanked me and we both agreed that the people who work at that salon do a very good job. We continued chatting about the advantages to being able to walk to places, and not be dependent on a car. How smaller shops might be limited in variety but have more personality/quality although higher prices were noted. This was to be expected, and the value of walking and not having to drive distances just to pick up a loaf of bread or one forgotten item for dinner was reasonable. We continued talking, and she did point out that she was rather slow about walking down an uneven pavement, but I also pointed out that it was a lovely day, I was enjoying our chat and that we were walking the way I would be going anyway.
Shortly afterwards, another person came walking up towards us and called out to my companion – it was her daughter! She was wondering where her mother was, it had been a while and she was concerned, giving her mother a mock scolding (they both chuckled at that). Well, we told her that we were just enjoying the walk from the hair salon where we both had been. At that point I continued on my way saying my thanks for the chat and that it was lovely to have met her. I enjoyed not only that we had spoken to each other, but also to see how any limitation she may have had was not a barrier to her enjoying a walk, plus that she has a caring daughter who lives nearby
Garbage can yield beauty [ The technical term with this art is ‘simulacra’..] as proved here by a UVic recycling employee. He found these plastic flowers in the garbage and drives his electric buggy all over campus for his daily routes.
He draws appreciative comments all over campus. People often ask him for a ride in his ‘truck’.
Fresh moments in a bank line up that started with a question about the image on the back of his shirt.. Besides tennis.. he just completed his masters in Computer Engineering, and completed a job interview in his field. When asked what he brings to an interview, and subsequent position.. “fresh”.
I learned more about research assistant positions on UVic campus. May be helpful for a friend.
Five days ago I learned from a colleague at UVic that bus traffic from the bus loop is discontinued between 7 and 4 pm on weekdays due to road work on Ring Road. This resulted in having to take a 25 minute walk to the loop.. or catch the bus outside the UVic campus. The closest bus stop from our office does not allow her express bus to stop, therefore requiring a walk of several more blocks.
I phoned Victoria Transit, explained the problem, and the solution I was suggesting.. temporarily allow the Express bus to stop at the closer stop, 12 minutes from the office. The clerk totally understood the predicament and was determined to put this request on the ‘right’ desk.
5 days later, the change was made.
Finding tranquility on a large campus on a Sunday evening. Definitely a precious moment.
Was invited to a 20th wedding anniversary [ a second marriage] in a friend’s home. It was beautiful weather and packed. Lots of love. In this scene they are dancing and singing to “Love is all you need”.. with a live duo on guitar and keyboard/
