Giving legs to a story
We had a friend for dinner and he was full of stories about the difficulties facing small towns on Vancouver Island, because of the end of old growth inventories for them to harvest. I thought it was a super important story that CBC and others were not covering. I asked a retired CBC producer who I could contact. He gave me the contact info for a woman who’s a journalist in the new CBC bureau in Nanaimo. I phoned her and she asked me for some contacts that she could reach out to before she makes the three hour drive to one of the towns.
I spent the day thinking about who I could reach out to.. and in the end came up with a good friend in Merville and a retired police officer in Victoria who once worked in the town. Both ended up being able to provide rich background and sources for the journalist to contact.
I think it’s wonderful that you recognize these stories
Diamond In The Rough
It happened!
The diamond in our engagement ring fell off at the beach!
The beach where jewelry goes to die.
My wife spent hours looking for it. She hoped it had fallen off on the cement walkway before she walked in the sand.
She met the daughter and granddaughter of the host of “What’s Gone Well”, Christopher Bowers! They helped look for the proverbial needle in the haystack. It started to get dark my wife returned home. We went back to search with a flashlight in hope that we might see it’s gleam in the dark.
I used the light on my cell phone. People were so kind and sympathetic to us. All asked what were looking for and said they would keep an eye out for it. We searched the area where my wife felt it may have been lost. And there mixed in with a bit of sand it was, shining in the beam of my phone light. That Went Well!
Wow!
When a 65 year old woman in Nanaimo had no home when she left an abusive relationship. Hearing this , someone took her in,
Hello Strong Lady! Good job! You trusted to YOU. Now the universe keeps sending you guardian angels and miracles. You will see.
Be patient and Keep going!
Autumn Festival of Lights
We were so thrilled at the turnout for the first Gonzales
Lantern Festival.- over 500 people – hard to count.
We ran out of lantern making kits 150. So many families
especially young families.
Our committee of 4 were so happy.
We grouse about how much time kids spend on their phone but my grandson and his buddies are usually looking for something funny to share with each other
A great Ukrainian family that was renting my main floor, let me know about the third of the month that they had received an offer they couldn’t refuse, and were moving out by the end of the month.
I knew it could only be an avenue for good ., even though it was a an unknown and a bummer to lose great people I was so comfortable with
They offered to find a high quality family to replace them. The wife sat in on my meeting with this family for the first time, and was thrilled that all was acceptable.
