Because we moved from California a year or so ago, before today I had never, ever used a snow shovel, except for handing out Hallowe’en candy during the pandemic. Since it snowed again last night, and because my husband had been shoveling but wanted to take a break, I offered to continue the job of clearing the sidewalk in front of our house. This turned out to be not as easy as I thought it would be. There were uneven spots on the sidewalk, most of the snow was firmly packed, and the shovel was a bit unwieldy for me. Not many people were out walking, but one man passed by with a pleasant expression on his face and he looked at me. I explained that progress was being made. He replied about the state of the snow and the fact that it would be more difficult given the time of day. He asked about the shovel, and I passed it to him. He looked at it, and then proceeded to start shoveling the dense snow! Not only that, but he completed the entire side (I only had done about half)!! I did try to tell him he didn’t need to continue, but he kept on with it. Then when he did finish and handed the shovel back to me, I said I felt I should offer him something. He said he had his beverage of choice to enjoy when he got home. As I thanked him again and said what a good neighbor he was, he continued down the street on his way home. I think I had just ‘entertained an angel, unaware’.
A good friend of ours, now living in Surrey, had been moved to a hospital from a care facility. With some direction about what hospital he may be at, Loni was able to talk with the pastor who liked the comforting ideas Loni brought to the situation, at Dick’s hospital, and then to Dick himself. She passed this on to his daughter in Ontario who had told Loni that Dick was close to passing. The daughter booked a flight to Vancouver immediately. Hearing that Loni had been able to reach Dick himself, she was able to talk to Dick on the phone before she left. The next day Loni heard that he had passed before the daughter arrived. So lovely they’d had a chance to say good-bye.
On my ownI really find it hard sometimes to feel in place inside, like a wood drifting back and forth. A timely authentic conversation is like an anchor; an authentic dependable person is like a harbor. I appreciate finding someone to be that harbour.
As I look out the window at the snowy scene, I feel so blessed that yesterday was such a perfect day for driving so that we could be with our family on Christmas this year! It was such a loving, joyous day, we watched an old Christmas movie, did a fun gift exchange where we each bring a little gift and we draw a number to pick a gift then at the end we can trade with each other, it is fun and there are some very creative gift ideas! We had a delicious dinner and played a game, it was a really loving time together with lots of fun and laughter which means the world to me!
Also a couple of friends had a perfect Christmas with their families, we are all so grateful to have that special time!
