I met Michael, the author on a cruise a couple of years ago. We exchanged books we’d written. Reading his book is like revisiting the Alaska cruise. The details and rich stories and insights brings the ‘characters– both human and animal’, he’s met, alive, even while sitting a thousand km away.
I also appreciate the opportunity to stay in touch.. and see how he adapts to the new world of cruise ships at anchor for at least a season.
While texting with a friend about a challenge she was facing.. I was reminded when my teaching career changed dramatically by realizing, that one particular student had no right to impede the learning of the other middle school classmates. That realization on a Sunday morning, set my plans in motion immediately. Despite subsequent lame pleas from the counsellor who said that student was successful in all his other classes, I proceeded and the situation resolved beautifully. He ended up out of my class from his own actions… and I felt empowered, not cowered by his antics and the ripple effect they had. I went on to a triumphant time at that school.
We had over a box full of great song books and arrangement-writing materials. Over dinner my daughter suggested a family friend who was teaching music in Alberta. Loni contacted him and he was interested in having this great resource. We can drop them off at his brother’s in downtown Victoria, a fellow we both really admire.
Great call.
He taught for 43 years. We taught in two schools together. I learned some really important approaches to teaching from him.
I love his ways of ‘marking’ social get togethers in this life.
