I tried helping a pal with what I guessed over the phone was a failing hard drive .. my plan was to swap in an SSD from my MacBook of almost the same year which seemed really unhappy (random shutoffs, waking from sleep cooking hot having consumed most of its battery) .. confusing struggle ensued and it would only run horribly slowly (haven’t learned why) but in my attempts to come to a good ending I found an older drive in an enclosure that I thought had been dropped but turned out the enclosure died and the old disc was fine which was a perfectly good replacement for the dead drive and when I put the SSD back in my laptop and played with it some more I nailed down its problem to RAM sticks going bad which on this old model is the cheapest and easiest replacement
While doing yoga in the kitchen today, I reminded myself how badly the windows needed washing. In the afternoon I found a pan big enough to fit the cleaning sponge. It wasn’t just the windows, but the screens. The results today were dramatic. I washed the screens with the shower wand… What a difference! Each time I pass by one of our windows I marvel at the impact of that effort.
The job reminded me of one of the first jobs I did when I started my “Friendly Services” company as a student. Yes … it was window cleaning. On one of my first gigs I put a ladder through a small window.. and the rest of the afternoon was spend fixing it.
Over the past three weeks I would be hard pressed to cite one or even a small cluster of good events. People everywhere I go here in VicWest – heeding Dr. Bonnie Henry’s sound advice I am staying close to home avoiding public gatherings and observing physical distancing of at least 2 metres – people are waving, wishing and shouting “Stay Healthy” “Stay Safe” and the like. And each evening at 7:00 PM when my sweetie and I go out on our balcony with our pots and pans and spoons we are greeted by the cacophony of our neighbours on their balconies and the strangers who emerge from their suits in the 17 story tower facing us. I know it might to the uninformed sound like a racket but it is in my mind a symphony of gratitude to all those from the fire hall to the police station, from the grocery store to the hospital that are on the front lines risking their health to provide us with services to support the whole community. It just makes me want to try a paltry rendition of that song made famous by Louis Armstrong. “What a Wonderful World”
I love Bill Bryson’s writing… Here’s a performance piece from his book
I sent it out to my brother and he share his paper route experience that started when he was 11, over a couple of years. I had never heard about it. His older brother had set a good example and the sub manager thought that Howard may be ‘cut from the same cloth.’
When you are a writer and you are sending out your work for reviews, it is never an easy process no matter how good you are feeling about it! There is no better feeling when the review states the worst part of the book is that it had to end! Leaving your reader wanting more is one of the greatest reviews you can get! Especially from a 13year old! YES!
We made a large order at the Wholesale Club earlier in the week and went today to pick it up. Loni found one box that she didn’t order. When she tried to talk to cashiers they kept giving her the runaround until one woman handled it beautifully. Vigilance pays off… cleanly.
