Making thoughtful use of her time in a retirement home brings harmony and lifts the spirit. Here she intervenes when a disagreement may have taken hold.
I just started a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to make a recording of medicine songs that I’ve written. And I’ve been so wonderfully surprised to see people from my deep past coming out of the woodwork and donating. It’s such a warm feeling and I’m so grateful.
A few years ago when my Timex watch strap broke, it took Timex four months to replace it. They said broken watch straps are not repairable. Today when it broke again, I was surprised to find a lady at The Bay who created a new strap, plus fixed another watch – in 15 minutes! When I showed great appreciation she said she had received complaints for how long she took and was lifted by my gratitude. Good for the environment, good for our hearts!
This past weekend, I attended the 60th birthday celebration of a dear friend. It was a surprise party, and as is so often the case, the recipient was not a fan of surprises. I watched over the course of the night, how the birthday queen moved from being anxious and withdrawn, into a full and beautiful bloom. An evening primrose.
There were many special moments in the evening. Sing alongs, a love-inspiring father-daughter dance, and family speeches with endearing sentiments that had been carried for years, but only then so honestly expressed. There was the kind of laughter and tears that reminded us of our shared nature.
I left the party with a deeper understanding of the importance of honour in community. Although birthday celebrations in this part of the world are not bound by strict customs, there is much meaning to be realized from the ceremony of acknowledging and celebrating an individual, and a life. There comes a recognition of self-worth and personal impact. An affirmation of the path travelled, and a sense of place in the larger community.
I was also struck by the sense of having only known this person within a single plane of their dynamic existence. It’s as though we all have lives within our larger life (family life, friend life, work life, inner life), and the people within each category are not privy to the full picture. There is always so much more to a person than can be seen through one lens of relationship.
This week I am grateful for celebrating life.
