The phone on my desk was getting too hot to touch, and my out-going calls caused a taped woman’s voice to tell me that the call didn’t go through, or that I had dialled a long-distance number and try again, which resulted in the same message. So when two retired nephews were visiting me, I asked for help. Between them, they put in two new batteries, which caused it to cool down. Then they called the server’s tech support, and got a man in Vancouver with an eastern European accent, and discussed it all. This man called me late in the evening and asked me to do several little things to the phone, and to tell him about my modem, and he would phone me late the next day. The next evening he called me again and I was able to report that the phone was warm but now I could call locally and long-distance, and receive both kind of calls. He seemed very pleased and said that he had re-set the modem, and would make a note in my file. I’m grateful for all this help, and hope that it delays my need of getting an IPad with a camera, or whatever it is that my sons think I need!
A friend was working on a document with images and citing source material, had the computer crash. She had not been saving it periodically. Thank goodness Open Office’s auto recovery was in play. It’s easier to be the bomb when working with good software.
A friend, and former housemate, picked me up and we parked near the Conservatory of Music on Monday evening. The large security man allowed us in through the heavy metal gate to the adjacent small auditorium, and for the next hour we enjoyed a classical guitar recital of beginner players. These were very dear boys and one teen girl, ranging from about 5 to about 18. There were 12 of them, playing very short pieces of quiet, pleasant music with some skill and great concentration. Two Asian boys received boquets of flowers from Asian girls after they performed, and all were warmly applauded as they bowed after their time on stage. Their teacher acted as introducer and stage manager, and played duets with several of the students, all with a friendly touch.
Altogether, this was a happy glimpse of the quiet start of serious music in Victoria … something is going well.
Early on Sunday I decided to see if we could get a better patio umbrella on Freecycle as the one we’ve had for about 6 years had seen better days. I posted a request and within a half an hour found one that was new, and unneeded. The owner was moving. She appreciated that I came right away and picked it up.
I then advertised our old set and it went the next day. Everyone wins and no money was involved, no material wasted or dumped .
Hadn’t had a talk with my neighbour for some time. When I saw him in the driveway I went out and we had a great chat. It was full of information about his own plans and those of his landlord.
Able to give away almost all of our excess tomato plants. One friend was able to replace his precious planting that deer had destroyed.
