A discussion about minimum wage workers ( including Walmart) elicited this story of support for low income people in Victoria.
My career path is shifting toward the powerline trade, with my little brother. He’s been working with BC Hydro and a few private contractors over the past 10 years and really loves his work. There is a small window of opportunity to get on his crew, so I just acquired my Class 3 driver’s license yesterday & immediately submitted my resume to his employer. While I realize this is a HUGE career change, I am also excited for the challenge of a whole new learning environment!
We found an old scrabble game downstairs and since we had a newer version, we freecycled it. Gots lots of interest and though some folks were offered it earlier, one father came at 8 am. He said he wanted it to help their children learn how to spell.
I recently had a very good shopping experience at Capital Iron in Victoria. My electric fireplace ceased working, and my electrician friend said it needed to be replaced. The helpful man at Home Depot said that Capital Iron should have some. They had 4, all were 40% off. We liked the smallest, cheapest one, and a helpful man, who turned out to be the manager, said they would deliver it free if I could take it today. I could, and did. We noticed a crack on the decorative stonework, so he deducted another $50. When I asked about taking away my old one, he said the boys would pick it up and remove it. “The boys” , who turned out to be rather senior, came just after lunch, and in less than 10 minutes had put my old one on their truck, brought in the new one and got it going with it’s remote control, told me how to fix the crack with Polyfilla. All very satisfactory!
A girl in her 20’s was going to the Link program to upgrade many of her high school courses to get college entrance. She was referred to Loni as a tutor to help her cover some questions/ topics she still didn’t get. She needed to get 65% to qualify for her college entrance. She came to us for three 2 hour sessions and completed all hand in assignments for the whole Math 11 course. I spent 6 hours myself getting ready to help her with the statistics unit. Two of her 6 hours of tutoring was spent with me. She went in last week and wrote exams for all but one of the units (about 6 hours of writing)..and then today she wrote statistics. We just heard she got 76% for her course.
Found a food stamp we had borrowed from a store. We had been looking for it all day. I got quiet, and listened for the right idea. I also was clear that I needed to find it before 6:40pm. Finally, for the second time I heard the idea of looking in the freezer. I had looked the first time but found nothing. This second time I mentioned it to Loni and she said, “yes!” and went right to it.
