Over two days, my team toured ten temporary housing locations now managed by Our Place. I am humbled and grateful for the incredible caring staff who are upbeat and welcoming, creating gardens and places of peace for people who have endured so much trauma.
One senior woman was walking the hallways clutching a teddy bear. Back and forth. The staff said she was abused as a child.
At several places, neighbours have donated plants and cupcakes and cards to welcome new residents. A teacher of a Kindergarten class brought in 30 tiny framed paintings of rainbows and hearts and messages such as “Welcome to your new home.” “Loved you are”.
I do not ever take for granted my warm, safe, cozy apartment and unbidden white privilege. Yes I worked and studied hard to create a stable life. I also had two family members with mental illness that have opened my heart to empathy and grit.
We always have opportunities to grow and come from a loving place by listening.
I went to Courtney and accomplished a great deal of menus and venues [ purchasing and visiting]!
Loved to hear the penny dropped with someone new to What’s Gone Well . They wrote, ” Hi i really need to start to take note of my better moments in life before they are gone, stolen or forgotten.”
A short phone conversation on an unrelated topic ended with agreement to meet 20 minutes later for an unplanned bike ride together along undiscovered routes in Saanich, Oak Bay and Victoria. And we ran into Christopher along the way!
I went for a picnic with a friend at the lakeside spit north.
