The Mid Island Speech Arts festival as adjudicated by a S/A rookie. He was a good theatre teacher and director in his own town. Here, in a different location, he did a superlative job. When asked how much fun out of 10 she had during a long day, one of the students said,” 11, I didn’t realize how much fun adjudication can be.” This was her sixth speech arts festival she’d taken part in.
After waking this morning to the gentle cacophony of car and auto-rickshaw horns (well, I did; my daughter was somehow able to block it out for a few more hours; I think she’ll do well here), I showered and checked my e-mail. The Wi-Fi here is actually quite good–certainly better than Vancouver Airport. In fact, I’m quite pleased with our hotel. The room is clean, the staff are friendly, the shower does eventually warm up, pretty much everything works the way it’s supposed to (with the possible looming exception of the bathroom sink tap), and, bonus of bonuses, there is no unwanted wildlife. I haven’t even spotted a cockroach. For C$25 a night I ain’t complaining.
Following a scrumptious lunch with about twice as much food as we could dream of devouring we went to the railway station, reserved sleeper car tickets to Kochi (in Kerala) for the 26th and headed back to the hotel. When we were almost back I realized to my horror that I no longer had my iPad in my backpack. I recalled taking it out at the station to use as a writing pad as I filled out the form for our tickets and then setting it on the counter while I talked with the agent.
We dropped my daughter off at the hotel and back we went to the station. Well, we did after a 15-minute pantomime in which I tried to explain to the friendly young auto-rickshaw driver in English and horrible Hindi that I wasn’t waiting for my daughter to come out of the hotel to join us and that I wanted to leave now. He knew 5 or 6 languages, but English was his weakest. With the help of a couple of passers-by the “ah-ha!” moment finally came and we sped away.
You, dear reader, have doubtless surmised that all ended well because you’re reading this note. And so it was. The ticket agent cheerfully waved me along with her to the police office at the station where my iPad–veteran of two previous trips to India and four to California–was patiently waiting for me. Some honest soul had come to the counter after me, seen the iPad and turned it in to the agent and she had given it to the police. I hadn’t known for sure that this would happen but I was also not surprised that it did. Indians are like that. And, of course, the agent refused the money I offered for her kindness and honesty. A potentially sad experience was thus transformed into a wonderfully uplifting reminder of the great decency and integrity of so many people in this world. To top it off, I got the same driver–whom I’d grown rather fond of–back to the hotel. He knew the route pretty well by now.

So 5 years ago, I went to this local boutique, thinking it had more whimsical, old hippy clothes. Instead it had mostly basics, but I did find some leggings, fairly locally made (in Richmond B.C.) full price $40, which I though quite reasonable. They turned out to be high quality. I wore them pretty hard for 5 years, and finally they lost their shape. So today I went back to the store, not knowing if they would be in business 5 years later. Happily they were and they had leggings. They were made by the same people, but sightly lighter weight for the spring and summer. So I got a pair in black and another in navy. They are one size and so soft and comfortable. Also got a sleeveless dress which looks good with the leggings. I was happy to find out that EVERYTHING in the store is Canadian made and designed.
And the prices are not excessive. I will be back in October for their warmer leggings. It is called Humble Pie, and I hope she stays in business for many years.
When we pause for a moment we can easily find a moment that’s gone well… where we’ve felt safe.. despite some sketchy background ‘noise’ [ from the floor creaking and cracking] 45 feet below.
