.My daughter and husband realized that today was their last chance to vote in the federal election. They had to wait for 40 minutes in the line up, but got it done, as well as being here for a lovely dinner ahead of time. Great that they are taking it so seriously. The first official they talked to was discouraging, but they stayed despite his suggestions they come back later.
A local artist gave us another of her original paintings of first people’s culture. It adds such a BC touch to our guest room.
The power of reflecting..
Watched Freedom Writers again. So impressed with the power of a caring teacher, the impact of empathy . Great show. Hilary Swank stars in this fact-based story of an idealistic teacher at a tough high school in California who tries to inspire her troubled students through journal writing.
I used journals throughout my teaching career. Twenty years before Freedom Writers, I was working with very tough kids on the eastside of Vancouver. A playwright asked to use our journals for a play they were writing. It became ‘Juve.’ We took our students to the production at The Cultch. It was so cool to have them hear their stories acted out, what was important to them, alluded to on stage. Hearts were touched!
Went on an hour bike parade with Murray Rankin and supporters. Enjoyed the opportunity for fresh conversations and new insights about the campaign and other’s life experiences. Surprised and intrigued at how careers are made, how paths change, and what creates loyalty.
The mother was spirited and light in the aisle at Thrifties, her buggy had two bunches of flowers. I asked her what the occasion was. Something specific, or for her? ‘It’s what we do and it’s raining out!’
The daughter was full of sparkle as well. She said it’s a purple day. That’s what they decided at her preschool.
I asked the mom what was behind the joy. ‘We are from Argentina. That’s the spirit of our people.’
Took my bike to my bike tech who this time was able to adjust my derailer so the chain no longer rubs on it. This has been a long standing hassle which he had not been able to isolate before. Smooth ‘sailing’ now.
