Phoned Telus with a problem and met Terry. Appreciated how helpful, patient and resourceful she was. She’s worked there for 19 years. Glad to hear that senior management listen to their front line staff.
Later I went to a Telus store and the problem was resolved effortlessly. I got to spend time with a favourite sales person. I got a bit more information on possible next steps for a phone. A previous conversation with the Loyalty department netted me a $100 credit towards a new phone.
Helping other mothers and children
A neighbour who moved from Taiwan is often asked to help friends with raising their parents. Some of the important ideas she learned from raising her own university-aged children, are making a big difference in other families. Two of her important ideas: being patient, and talking to the children to effect change. So many people are asking her for help!
A remarkable comparison
Talking to Cdn Tire cashier… her first job was 8 mo of Dairy Queen.. where the customers were fun, but the staff not. Her candour and quick wit were refreshing… compared to the automatic talk, rap of the Thrifties cashier who asked meaningless questions without listening.. total disconnect and non sequitur.
When my credit card was approved at Cdn Tire I said, ” Such a good feeling.” An associate in passing said, “It’s the best.”
This cashier said, ” Getting off the roller coaster is the best.”
I asked what she was looking forward to in her last year of high school. She talked about future options, freely. I mentioned Mobilizing Hope.com had many examples…. and insights from people’s lives.
I love the dance of a good conversation. http://mobilizinghope.com
I asked a woman in the omelette line on a cruise ship what a moment that stood out from the cruise. She said ‘zip lining in Ketchikan terrified her.’ Turns out she has had a life of adventure. I loved the stories she shared right there waiting for her omelette. We ended up having breakfast together.
A friend told me about The Wolfpack at Cinecenta Theatre. I’d heard an interview months ago with the director. We walked there and it was a startling documentary. It got rave reviews at Sundance Film Festival. At the end I talked to a woman standing quietly in the foyer and asked for her impression. She had been brought up living with 11 siblings in a two bedroom apartment. I gave her my card. We’ll see if she wants to talk about this for Mobilizing Hope.com
Today as I was doing morning chores, I remembered that my son in northern Alberta said that he would be mailing down to me two pair of work boots for the Olde Town Shoe Repair shop to fix for him. Because I was going out, I put a note on my mail box “Please leave parcel” so that if it did happen to come today, the mailman wouldn’t take it to the Post Office for me to go and get. When I came back in the early afternoon, there was a medium-sized, heavy box by the front door. I called Mike at Olde Town and he made an arrangement to get the box of boots from me. This son will be visiting me in Victoria in mid-September, and can fly home with them, hopefully good as new.
Very grateful that this all worked out so fast.
