Making the best of a travel opportunity
When I arrive with only the essentials, expecting simply to be there, I always have more than enough and am pleasantly surprised by my adventures there.
Best celebration or party
We hosted a cast party. The cast was between the ages of 6 and 15. The parents and all the crew were also there. They were told that they could rewrite scenes or songs from the show and perform them for the rest of us if they wanted to. A boy (10) wrote a tribute song for the pianist (18), and got some of the kids to sing it with him. A song was given different words to honour a girl (17) who had volunteered her time to assist the director for a month. There were many other scenes and songs redone to compliment people who had helped out. Many were just hysterical. They attention given the performances was amazing. A parent helped a child write a song to honour the director (19) they had come to love so much during that month. She printed out the words for many of the cast to sing to him. Parents leaving that night said that this was the best party of any kind they had EVER attended,…..bar none. I think it was the invitation for individual and group creativity that made it so special
Lessons learned on the road
On Mexican busses, there is usually a seat behind the driver, reserved for the extra driver and fare collector. I have often been given that seat and asked to play my banjo. When I offered to pay my fare, they would not take my money. I had paid my way with music. This happened many times. Mexican Culture values the arts and artists much more than we do in North America.
If you have music, take it with you when you travel, and share.
