Valuable idea you picked up while travelling
One of the more recent valuable ideas would be the biodigestor, which is basically a heavy-duty, giant plastic bag they use here in Honduras to capture methane gas from decomposing animal manure and use the gas for cooking. It’s a very simple thing that can be built in a day and only costs about $400 to construct, but the result is that a family with one cow can get 2-3 hours of methane every day from the manure. By doing that they reduce their use of firewood (a big problem here) and reduce the risk of environmental contamination from the manure. They say dog and people manure is even better for creating methane! There’s no smell at all from the biodigestor, and other than a roof and a fence to protect it from the elements, the only maintenance is to feed it a bucketful of manure diluted in water every day.
I was browsing through my twitter followers and saw a teacher I had worked with last year. I tweeted her and and heard back that she was wanting to connect to do another CSI project again.
Lessons learned “on the road”
People often fear rural areas when travelling because they believe they are less safe. It is in rural areas where I have always been taken in, fed, and felt great love while travelling. There is a sense of accountability amongst smaller communities that you don’t find in more densely populated areas. People feel they represent something memorable, something less anonymous. I guess the idea is that even if we get caught up in the rush of a big city, remember that you are a person amongst many other people who all deserve your time, attention, and love – you can be memorable.
One former student came to say what an impact having Margaret as a teacher for one year had on her. She discovered a new talent and now works and sells her art internationally.
