This is one of Montreal’s lesser known treasures, the Depanneur Cafe. I’ve met and re-connected with some great musicians there.
I asked a custodian I’ve got to know what makes her happy. She said volunteering. Turns out she’s on the Malahat fire department.
Another WGWT is that with the changes they’s made on the highway, traffic accidents are way down on the mountainous highway.
Two weeks into my French classes, I was reviewing college diploma programs offered in Ontario, thinking I might have my last kick at the new-career can. After hundreds of listings, the word “électroneurophysiologie” caught my eye; it was part of “Techniques d’électroneurophysiologie médicale”. In a past life, I had done years of graduate work in neuroscience, with a focus in brain electroneurophysiology. This course was offered in east Ottawa, within the limit of commuting distance, and was the only program I could find that was related to my previous academic life and could lead to earning me a living. But it was offered in French; that was problematic. After some research, I found the intake of students at the only English program offered in Canada was every other year; unfortunately not the current year. I didn’t have enough savings to wait another year.
I applied to the French school along with several disparate programs spread around southern Ontario. When the time came to finalize my decision a few months later, I had taken enough French classes to think I might be able to pull off a French education given my background in the field.
Now I am here in Victoria, recently graduated with distinction from the French college program, and starting a part-time job in my new field next week. If I hadn’t decided to take a shot at fulfilling a long-standing goal before I moved away from the opportunity, I could not have succeeded in this course, and I would not be here with very different prospects for my future. (But I am still not really bilingual… oh well, maybe a few more courses will do it).
