This week, Elias’s grandmother (and Mona’s mother) Eva came to visit. She cooked us a traditional Moroccan stew that we all ate together with our hands out of a communal bowl. Of course hand-eating was very popular with little Elias. Josiah (who grew up in Burkina Faso) and Mona (who grew up in Sudan) swapped stores about varying table manners in different parts of Africa. Afterwards we had many pots of tea and Swedish apple cake and chatted until everyone was falling asleep.
Sharing that meal and experience has been one of the happiest nights for me so far this fall. 🙂
What makes me happy? Helpful phone calls … recently got a good one.
This reminded me of an experience one of my friends that I share a hobby with, had. She was in a minor parking lot car accident, and called her son, a new-car salesman, to pick her up. He had two tow-trucks there, one for each car, in 10 minutes, took her to ICBC and quickly got her a nice cheque, then to his car agency and bought her an almost-new car!
Last night one of my far-flung grown children called, and I told him a bit of my forthcoming trip plans. He was interested, then volunteered: “If you ever get into any kind of trouble when you’re away, just phone me and I’ll head to the airport and be there – anywhere in the world – in 8 to 12 hours!” He claimed to know how to get a replacement passport, or money, anywhere. I’m not expecting to test this offer, but it was nice to get it!
