A backpacker’s life at home is changed from his experiences ‘on the road.’ He became more patient , more willing to slow down and pay attention and listen to strangers he met.
After a few days I noticed that he always did his homework, and was reading things around the house. Then he started to read all his big brothers Hardy Boys books.
After about two months, I asked his teacher about his progress, and she was happy to tell me that he was up to “grade level”, and she would like to continue working with him. She had just finished some special training in England to help slow readers, and he was responding very well.
He stayed there until the end of the term, reading lots of boys’ books, truck magazines, etc. Then back to regular school, and eventually into grade XII. He got his commercial driver’s licence when he was 19, and has been driving trucks ever since.
