Going the extra distance for a customer at Cadbora Bay Books has a surprising story end.

My friend Christopher Bowers asked for “fathering moments” that stood out, so I posted this one on his page What’s Gone Well Today. Here it is, in honour of dads and their children everywhere.
“When our daughter was a preschooler, I loved reading her to sleep. One evening as we finished a book, she wanted another story, so I made one up about Maggie, a girl her age who enjoyed wonderful adventures on her family’s farm in Saskatchewan, a place Caitlin had never been. The only problem was, neither had I.
Caitlin immediately began asking for a Maggie story every night–and sometimes wanted two, or even three. I improvised as best I could, and even retold some of the earlier ones, which fortunately was just fine with my audience. Sometimes when I was completely out of ideas, I asked her to take over the narrative, which she did–happily and creatively.
Last month my wife and I took her 85-year old mother back to the farm in Saskatchewan where she grew up, and I was pleased to text our daughter, now 20 and studying in Montreal, that I was on the wheat farm outside Kindersley doing research, and would soon have a new set of Maggie stories for her. She said she remembered with fondness lying in her darkened room (no lights needed when the storyteller is winging it) and hearing me tell her about Maggie’s exploits, but indicated that I didn’t need to invest a lot of time in imagining new ones, thanks anyway. Strangely, the actual farm we visited didn’t seem nearly as magical as the one in our stories.
That she remembered those moments was a wonderful Fathers’ Day gift in advance for me.”
Happy Fathers’ Day to all!
Another father tribute…
Thanks for being strong when I was a teenager, and now as a local politician, reminding me that “respect” and “fairness” are qualities to remember when working with people “treat them the way you would want to be treated”
