Feeling unwelcomed in her first two Canadian schools, this Iraqie grade 10 student felt as traumatized as when she lived in the war in Iraq. Through the help of Cowichan Intercultural Society she learned new skills. After that support she returned to do presentations to the original school where she had only been able to last just two weeks a few years before. The school classes were transformed before her eyes.
Christopher, Thanks for this story. It is so beautiful and heartwarming.
A highschool drama teacher from Courtenay has always been concerned about homophobia in schools and society. She started writing a play in September and has taken it on the road ( with support from the Justice Institute). It’s called ‘Torn Rainbow’ We saw it at OUR Ecovillage last night Here 6 actors talk about why they love being in the show. The teacher watches how audiences interact with the show and rewrites part of the script after each performance to maximize the impact.
