Last Friday had an ominous start. Judy went off in the red Honda Fit to yoga. She had just turned onto the highway when she realized that she had a flat tire. She phoned me and I hot footed it over to where she had pulled off the road. I had last changed a car tire when we had the Landrover around 1982.
Judy and I had the jack under the car – not in the right place as it turned out – and had loosened the wheel nuts with some difficulty (I had to stand on the wheel wrench and jump up and down to begin the process on each one). Then a pick-up truck with a man and his young son (12 – 14 years of age would be my guess) pulled up and asked if we could use some assistance. We eagerly responded in an almost simultaneous affirmative. Whereupon the two of them, father doing most of the work assisted ably by son removed the flat and replaced it with the silly high pressure donut which these days substitutes for a spare. We thanked. They responded: “No problem, glad to be of assistance.” and after answering our query as to a tire repair facility in town bid us adieu and were on their way.We then drove to the tire repair place and saw a long screw had penetrated the tire. It was quickly repaired and that was that. It was only shortly after that we recalled that Honda provides road service for the first three years after new vehicle purchase. Oh well, had we remembered and followed proper protocol we would have never met those two helpful fellow humans.
Coming to Green Drinks Victoria for the first time changed two people’s work lives
returned to victoria after visiting my “old” community of the comox valley … remembering that home is where the heart is … and not tied to any geographic location … sunny days in victoria … truly appreciated after my challenging trip to SE Asia … happy to be home tonight …
So much has gone well. I had a chance to record for a microboard http://www.microboard.org/ where a group of caring and committed people come together to enable a man to live the life of his choosing with support, autonomy, growth and joy. What a beautiful idea! Maybe we all need a microboard in our lives – friends, elders, family, neighbours coming together to offer encouragement, guidance, advice, a listening ear, reflection, ideas. Maybe we don’t meet around the fire any longer but there is room on my couch or around my dining room table.
Yesterday I hiked for 4 hours in the hills and around the lakes above Ladysmith with my best buddy Al . We had a great day. I talked him thro the great digital story telling workshop I did with you at the VIU CBR gathering. I explained the need to ask ‘the’ question, to maintain eye contact, to have a ‘supportive’ face. He’s a sociable type and curious about life, so he of course loved the idea. Afterwards, we went to a local pub, it was very busy and the waitress was running around looking very harried. So when she came over to us and did the standard customer greeting I asked her “So, what’s going well for you today?”. She stopped dead in her mid-wipe of our table and after looking at our smiling faces (and knowing we were listening and waiting with good heart) she put her cloth down and talked to us slowly and passionately how her landscaping and gardening at home and how it is coming along. She sparkled. We sparkled. Went she left, Al said “Wow, what a question: it works”. Al, who is currently single, then decided that is how he will begin the conversation with any lovely lady whom he is lucky enough to run into in the near future. I’ll keep you informed about his impending success.
