I lived in Sweden 22 years ago on a Rotary Exchange. It was the most fantastic year of my life, full of adventures and learning experiences. I lived with 2 families and while I was treated as a member of each family, over time, we were less in contact, except occasional social media messages. Out of the blue, I received a message from my Swedish brother that he was visiting Vancouver. I immediately made lunch reservations for the next day and was able to meet his lovely wife. The meal was fantastic, the chef came out of the kitchen to meet my extended family and he gave us a real VIP explanation of the dishes. It really warmed my soul to reconnect with one of the most caring people who played a big role in my life for 6 months, and repay his hospitality to take him out for an amazing meal in city he didn’ expect to find me.
I connected with a new person on the bus from asking her, “Do you have a minute for my question?”
She said, ” Of course”.
I thought about the question in my mind that I wanted to ask, and then decided to ask .
I asked, “What’s gone well today?”
She first said, “Nothing really good happened. Then “just class”, then “it was fun. Lively.”
I asked her to tell more about her program.
She spoke, I listened. And she asked back to me. I spoke.
Then “we took a photo together”. It was actually good.
But I had to got off the bus so soon.
She asked to add my contact. We exchanged.
When I was writing by book Hi! Conversation Changes Lives I thought of buses as ‘conversation salons.’ You totally nailed it with the new friend.
When I got home and looked at the receipt I realized she had not given me a special day discount.
I returned in the afternoon and met Leslie, who had come back to work a couple of days / week after she retired. “To get out of the house.” She was so efficient , not put off by computer messages like “no discount allowed”. She looked further and found a way to get around it. I asked her how The Bay shows they value / appreciate her, and she said, “They don’t”.
I left message on Yelp about how fortunate the company is to have her on staff, in these times of difficult staff retention
