Community is truly the strongest source of knowledge

A small group of craftspeople caught my eye as I walked by the First Peoples House at Uvic today. I entered and ended up talking to a craftswomen. She enlightened me on how to enter the First Peoples House and what it meant to be there. “Every time you enter you are to cast away any negative energy because it burdens us all; The First Peoples house is a place of positivity and family (in the community sense)”. The First Peoples House “is a home and ought to be treated as your own”.
We then talked about extending First Nations values and principles into the Canadian mainstream thought, culture and action. At the end of the day “Our environment, and our home are the same thing”; “you would dump toxic waste or pollute your house would you”? Then why do we do it? “Cities are primarily built by and for greed and that shapes our connection to the land in a negative way. Our communities should be built by and for families, through positivity and collectivism”.
Community is truly the strongest source of knowledge. It is funny how age old practices like the First Nations connection to their land are not only admirable, they make more sense and are more sophisticated than many modern practices.
What a vibrant community we could have! It all starts with a conversation #travelerinyourowntown
TravelerInYourOwnTown moment…
On my way out the mall I decided to cut through the pet store. Saw a man with a parrot on his shoulder and asked what it’s name was. He told me “Papoosh” and told me to hold out my hand and his bird climbed right on, truly a beautiful animal!
I asked an older gentleman at the gym what inspired him to stay in shape. He told me about his two great grandsons, and how they keep him on his toes. He said he wanted to be able to keep up to them as long as possible. I admired his spirit. Thanks to SES Consulting #travelerinyourowntown Thanks for your great work! I am learning that there is so much to be gained from simply asking the right questions.
Facilitating a meeting for an organization about furthering their mission. One of the questions we had them look at was.” What is something you’d like to do, that you’ve never done before?”
I encouraged them to share without fear that ‘it’s not done that way’, of ‘worrying that org bylaws would be contravened.’ It was freeing and fun to explore this.
