Was collecting “Friends of CBC” signatures in support of CBC funding for the next election outside the Stuart McLean show. While it was a cold night, the folks in the audience were warm hearted and enthusiastic about signing. I loved their spirit, and their appreciated my volunteering.
A depression lifted from being listened to and taken seriously…
Interviewed a fellow today.. who really needed to talk 30 yrs ago when a loved one died and he was to make all arrangements.. He found himself on a BC Ferry and after some conversations with some empathetic crew ended up on the bridge, steering the ferry for a few minutes. The intense pleasure and fascination he experienced in observing and asking questions, lifted his depression and helped him carry out the responsibilities he was faced with in dealing with his loved one’s passing.

UVicCycling Club offers bike tune-ups to students by donation on campus.. while they wait, or while they are in class. Loved their spirit, their joy in helping others take a next step in their travels.
Travelers follow encouragement … good leads … and persist:
Transit drivers and passengers had encouraged me to contact BC Transit marketing department with my ideas to improve the rider experience. So when I found myself across the street from their admin offices, I went in and after overcoming some obstacles, was introduced to a charming rep from the marketing department who totally ‘got’ TravelerInYourOwnTown as it relates to the passenger experience. It was a simply charming and mutually informative exchange between two transit fans, with the promise to take the conversation to others in the corporation.
Digging deeper and solving a problem
A friend visiting us misplaced her phone. It had dropped out of her pocket. She phoned it from our house and this grocery clerk who had found the phone, spent some time and found the call in the phone log and phoned her back.
Introduced myself to a 30 something fellow, turns out we have the same name, and I know his son. On the weekend the son and I had talked for a few minutes about his own prowess and passion for baseball, specifically pitching. The son talked about leadership and trust on his team that is so helpful in his own high performance.
The father heard about the chat and liked the idea of capturing some of his son’s experiences on video as he develops. My moments with the father were a bonding, door opening conversation with someone who minutes before had just been a stranger…..
