oday on the Tallman Ranchita a lesson in teamwork: As I was preparing to head west on my journey to G’ma’s birthday dinner in Kamloops, I got ambitious and loaded a too-large bale core onto my sled to haul to the pasture as a token of my love (the grass is abundant, but they like to be served). I could not budge it, so I did what I’ve been thinking I should do for about 8 years: Asked my old mare for help. She hasn’t pulled in about 12 and wasn’t confident in herself, so I asked her daughter to help too. With a little encouragement in a jimmy rigged “harness” skillfully crafted out of cinches, trailer ties and lunge lines (and matching, of course) my rookie team became a chore team and got the job done.
