Loved the spirit and resourcefulness of these two mothers. They said that life was getting easier as they are no longer babes in arms. They saw a freight bike across the street and said that was on their radar for their next step.
A friend rode her bike to UVic and came home without her lock. I rode out the next day and there, by the bike stands , was the lock just resting. Nothing lost!
Cycling through Playfair Park I came upon a woman carrying a ladder. I was later told this was Colleen O’Brien, “Queen of the Camas, Defender of the Violets, and Protector of Playfair Park.” She had been photographing the meadow in the early morning light. Turns out that she was the ‘driver’ for the field restoration project, helping remove invasive species, among other things. She said that the tack that the city often takes is to do nothing, and that just makes it worse. I loved her dedication, passion and follow through in her work.
A friend phoned with a non responsive laptop. The idea came to totally unempower the device, including taking out the battery. It seemed easy to do, but only when I turned the computer right side up again did the battery come off. After letting all systems rest for a a few minutes, we installed the battery , turned on the device and all was well.
Lots of lessons as we approach situations that seem non responsive.
I had a toilet running intermittently, which didn’t bother anyone until it started to run steadily. I remembered reading about the local bicycle plumber in this space, found the number and called for help. Erik came in a few minutes with his sturdy bike and trailer with 2 metal boxes of equipment. He knew just what to do, had a new spare part with him and soon it was all repaired. We had a friendly chat as I was paying him, and I found out about his multiethnic background and his previous mechanical job in Fort St. John. A good encounter.
Lovely dinner at the Victoria Golf Club. Enjoyed that people moved around a bit so the conversation flowed. There was no rush to the evening at all. Delightful.
