Telling Your Story: The better the question, the better the story

Objective:
● understand the soft and hard story catching skills.
● become comfortable on either side of the camera
● produce at least 1 video clip which could be published
Agenda:
1. Check-in: draw, responsibility, take-away.
2. 10 minute talk about Story Catching, and
Introduction of Kirk Schwartz, Media Net.

3. A careful look at technical considerations and options.

Strengths and weaknesses of each
4. Becoming comfortable on either side of the camera
Folks in pairs will look at :
Blocking, lighting and sound considerations.
Shoot 2 or 3 minute clips about some aspect of your agency or personal work that is going well.

Final Cut Express
iPhones
6. Connecting to computer, light edit, upload to video blog
7. Using: Linking, embedding, DVD
Balance of our workshop:
Creating story pieces about one of your projects or initiatives.
Processing and editing your piece.
Produce a video clip talking about moments that stood out in the workshop
Opening a YouTube account and uploading your QuickTime movie

Tips for interviewing:
What is your story/ intent/ focus?
Have a great question or two in mind. ( Use the WGWT Card deck.)
Listen intently.. draw your next question from what their responses.
Tech tips:
Use a tripod, external microphone, and have a quiet setting, with sufficient light.
Shooting:
As much as possible, edit in the camera.
Ask for their opening line.
Coach them- encourage by listening and asking for more.
Editing:
Having a Mac is certainly an asset
Use Final Cut Express
Connect camera using firewire.
Final Cut> System Settings
Select folders for the video on your hard drive
To save your video on the computer:
File> Log and Capture
Editing and adding titles
In the browser window, double click on a sequence, to place in the Viewer window.
Create a new sequence ( File> New sequence) you’ll save this as
Select which segments of this sequence you want
Add transitions between sequences, at the beginning of any segment:
Effects> Video transitions> dissolve>….
Add a title
Effect> Video Generators> Text> Lower third
To export it to be viewed on a computer, or internet:
Click on sequence
Export>Using Quicktime conversion >Settings and Options
Use: Broadband Medium
Options: Size ___________
Save
Create YouTube Account:
YouTube.com > Create account > Sign me up
To place on YouTube:
Sign in> Upload > drag your .mov file to the ‘Upload video’ window
Set the privacy settings
Save changed.
